I spent 23 years in UK Defence, 6 of them working embedded within 22 SAS. The job never changed, the stakes were just higher: get the right information to the right people at the right time so they can make a more informed decision faster. On leaving I transitioned my skills into AI, which also enables teams to make faster, data driven decisions and reduce error.

My background is operations, change management and service delivery, which is why the technology is the part I worry about least. Most AI rollouts stall on people and process. It takes time to map out business processes in an organisation, and only then can it start to be automated. People need time to digitise knowledge.

So we start with the ground rather than the tools. Training and enablement first, because adoption is the whole game. The most important part of this transformation is a mindset shift in how work gets done.

Then the governance layer: the AI Manifesto and the guardrails that go with it, built to ISO 42001, the UAE Personal Data Protection Law (PDPL) and NIST AI RMF. Governance is a gate. It removes the barriers to adoption.

Security runs through all of it. I was a technical delivery lead on the ASGARD AI programme for the British Army (about US$41M), I'm Security Cleared, and I've worked alongside enterprise CISOs on AI risk in the enterprise.

Dr Ross leads on AI governance and edge AI deployments, to support organisations to govern AI risk properly.

Dr Ross is a Chartered IT Professional and Fellow of the BCS. He is currently working directly with UK Defence on governance and implementation of AI and automation systems, and he serves as an AI Ethics Adviser for a UK Police Force's Ethics Committee.

That's grounded in research as well as practice. Dr Ross completed a PhD in digital transformation and AI for the Royal Navy at HMNB Devonport, and he has internationally published peer-reviewed work on digital transformation, AI governance and risk.

Dr Ross was formerly a director, and Chief Technology and Finance Officer, of a UK police-led cyber resilience centre, supporting small and medium enterprises to protect their organisations against cybercrime and manage their cyber risk. After this role, he continued to support policing as a cyber assessor, assessing a UK Police Force's cyber maturity against the NCSC Cyber Assessment Framework, a process which now includes appropriate consideration of AI governance.

He has also taught AI and cyber, amongst other subjects, at university and school levels, from KS3 through to master's degree.
